Newark Courier Complete Their First European Delivery

MDS Courier Services have recently returned from Innsbruck after successfully completing a delivery of sensitive goods.

The trip took four days travelling by van and ferry as the consignment was too large for the motorcycle or smaller vehicles. After leaving Newark on Thursday morning the route was via Ramsgate, Ostend, Gent, and Stuttgart to Innsbruck, resulting in a successful delivery on the Friday evening.

Leaving Newark in sunshine at the start of the day we soon hit snow storms and found roads blocked by the bad weather on the outskirts of Ramsgate. The Channel Tunnel and Port of Dover were already closed by this time.

Managing to navigate around the closed roads we arrived at the ferry on time and were soon loaded on to the boat feeling very small amongst the large articulated lorries . The channel crossing took five hours and was fairly choppy arriving at Ostend with only 45 minutes for us to reach our overnight stop in Gent. In the dark and in freezing temperatures we reached our hotel with minutes to spare.

After a good night's sleep we were on the road again heading south via Antwerp, Aachen toward Koblenz and the mountains, by the afternoon it seemed as though most of Germany was heading to the Alps to ski. With temperature varying between -3 and - 5 the snow kept falling and we gave up on trying to use the windscreen washers which had frozen up earlier in the day. Petrol stations in the area provide wash buckets and sponges with long handles for travellers to keep windscreens clear and everyone seemed to be making use of these. Even in the snow the journey along the bottom of the mountains is impressive on the outskirt of Innsbruck in the dark we saw castles and ski slopes illuminated and looking spectacular.

Our delivery address was reached in the dark after an interesting drive along a single track road up the mountain side and after unloading we were thankful that our hotel was not far away.

In the morning we were treated to a very snowy view of Innsbruck from the hotel carpark and after breakfast we started to make our way back to Gent.

Job completed we took time to do a little sightseeing, driving back through the mountains to see something of the area. Views were stunning even though at 11 o'clock in the morning temperatures registered -10. Travelling through one village we were treated to the sight of people dressed as Vikings, teddy bears and also in traditional German/ Austrian dress carrying traditional sledges as they made their way up the side of a mountain obviously to some sort of village fete!

We stayed overnight at the same hotel in Gent and after taking an hour out on Sunday morning to briefly see the town (which is well worth a visit )we made our way back to the lunch time ferry and home. - Job done successfully.
